Price: 100% Free Site
Rating: 60 out of 100

squidooSquidoo is a free site where people can write about anything they want (for the most part) and earn money.

There are lots of advantages in writing at Squidoo. Here are some of them.

  1. Squidoo has Google adsense and infolinks on squidoo pages which earn money. The money earned is put into a sort of pool. Lensmasters each get a cut of the earnings based on the ranking of their lenses.
  2. There are sales modules(Amazon and eBay) that you can add to your page when someone buys something Squidoo get paid. They split the earnings with you 50/50.
  3. If you own a product, you can sell it on your Squidoo page and make money
  4. Writing on Squidoo and linking to your website can be an effective way to give your backlinks.
  5. You can write reviews and share your affiliate links on Squidoo.

Disadvantages of Squidoo:

  1. Since you don’t own your Squidoo sites, Squidoo can lock your lens or shut down anytime they want. Learn some of the risks of writing at Free Sites Like Squidoo.
  2. It takes a lot of time and effort to make money with Squidoo.
  3. In the past, Squidoo lenses ranked really well with Google. Now, not so much.

Here is my Squidoo story…

I had been writing on Squidoo for over 6 years and I have earned a nice income while doing so. I found that when I created a page at squidoo it was usually indexed with Google very quickly and I could generally see traffic pretty quickly. By writing Reviews on my favorite Amazon products I earned a nice part time income with Squidoo and Amazon combined. My best month was in 2012 when I earned just under $2000 in one month.

It took a lot of time and work to make money with Squidoo. In order to make that $2000 I had over 400 pages, And it took me over 4 years to get to 400 pages.

These days Squidoo doesn’t get the Google love that it used to get in the past. Sadly, I earn very little income from my Squidoo lenses.

squidoo pie chartSo what do I think of Squidoo? I love Squidoo and I always will. I sort of look at Squidoo as an ex boyfriend. Once it was the best. 2 years ago I would have rated Squidoo 90 out of 100.

Squidoo made me thousands of dollars. So I will always love Squidoo. And most of all Squidoo is where I got to first experiment with affiliate marketing, keyword research and SEO. Squidoo is what helped me realize I wanted to be an affiliate marketer.

Today, sadly I have to give Squidoo only 60 out of 100. And here is why. This blog is about helping others. And I honestly can’t recommend Squidoo to anyone who wants to make real money with affiliate marketing. If you want to make real money then you need to read my review of Wealthy Affiliate.

If I could go back in the past, I would be creating my own websites. But I don’t have any regrets with the years I spent at Squidoo. I believe that everything happens for a reason and I made a lot of good friends there. Squidoo was instrumental in helping me find Wealthy Affiliate.

I would recommend Squidoo to someone wants to get some experience with writing but isn’t quite ready to create their own website. Squidoo is a good way for a newbie to get their feet wet. Squidoo is easy and fun.

Squidoo is the absolute WORST affiliate experience I have had on the Internet. AVOID.
Some of the ads are theirs and some are yours… But, no specific algorithm for how that is executed is given. For all you know, the highest-profiting 40% are theirs and the remainder 60% are yours.
Also, all the squid, squid angel, and giant squid, etc. business creeps me out as a bit demonic.
And, I noticed my Christian dream interpretation articles virtually NEVER appear in search results on the site. But, the New Age ones get top listing.

I’m sorry you had a bad experience with Squidoo. At one time, before 2012 Squidoo was amazing for newbies. Now, like you, I don’t recommend squidoo to people who want to make money online. It just isn’t as effective as it used to be. You are so much better building your own WP website where you have total control. It is much easier then people realize. I usually suggest they start a free blog with siterubix (available at Wealthy Affiliate). This way they get the training and support as well. Have a great day!

Hi Wendy, I am a Wealthy Affiliate member, and I was reading some of your blogs, some of them as part of HubPages. What do you have to say about them?? Do you think it is worth joining to HubPages??

    • Wendy Krick says:

Hi Gilda! I haven’t been on Hubpages in ages. I’ve been putting most of my energy into my blog sites. But I used to make nice income with Amazon and made a bit with Google Adsense as well.

It does take a lot of work and patience to earn on Squidoo. Learning about affiliate programs and SEO is a good start.
You can also create a free Zazzle store and place the links to your store on Squidoo, earning you money on two sites.

Thanks for the info in this article.

  4. Neil says:

    Hi Wendy

Thanks for this interesting post on Squidoo and I too have published some lenses over the recent years, but not many mind.

My lenses are focused on the holiday periods such as promoting artificial christmas trees with amazon and halloween costumes with commission junction. I must say that they have generated some big sales for me over those periods because I got them ranked on the first pages of google for specific keywords :)

Thank You for sharing your story.

    • Wendy Krick says:

You are very welcome Neil. Thanks for your comment.

  5. Diana Goodwin says:

Ok, I admit it. I set up some Squidoo lenses about a year ago, and bailed after about 3 weeks. I’m going to tackle it again and am determined to follow through!

    • Wendy Krick says:

Squidoo is a great way to get started with affiliate Marketing. It’s fun and you can generate some extra cash. And eventually you should create your own sites as well.
