How To Be Productive While Working From Home

So I wanted to share with you some of my tips on How to be productive while working from home.

  • Work In A Well Lit Area: I find when I work in a well lit room I feel more energized.
  • Remember to Move:  I find that I am way more productive if I get up and stretch my legs and move around often. I also love to take a nice walk after a few hours of typing. It also helps to clear my mind.
  • Keep Home and Office Separate: It is important to keep your house chores separate from the work you do for your online business. You can separate this two ways. One way is to give yourself 5 minutes each hour to do a quick household chore like throwing in the wash, or running the dishwasher. Or you can decide that there is a certain chunk of time you will focus on home chores. For me, On my day off from the day job, I work on my business as soon as I wake up in the morning. Then I take a 3 hour break for household duties and lunch. I then work on my business from 2 to 6.
  • Get Out of Your Pajamas: Yes it is great that we can choose to wear our pajamas or sweats all day long if we want, but I find that I get more stuff done when I’m up and out of my pajamas. Even if all I have on is a pair of jeans and a tee shirt.
  • Pretend You Are Not Home: I find that I can avoid distractions by pretending not to be home. I know if I wasn’t at home I wouldn’t be answering the phone or watching tv. So I turn them off.
  • Have set hours of operation: Set your hours of operation and commit to working those hours. I also make my hours of operation very clear to my friends and family. So they all understand that although I may physically be home, I’m not available.

These are some of the things that have helped me out. And I hoping they will help you in figuring out how to be productive while working from home.

Great article here. I think an important step is to make sure your office is clean and well organised. Recently I have been reading into japanese styles of management and would highly recommend the 5S system to get organised.

Cheers for the article, I look forwarded to reading more on here.

Hi Wendy, I love these tips. I also find that if I am wearing my pyjamas I do not get no where near enough done compared to when I am dressed casually. I do a lot of work from home (mainly planning) for my main work, and this will definitely help, so thank you very much for putting this together. I do appreciate it

I know what you mean Hassan. Those pj’s are so comfy but for some reason too relaxed for working from home. I guess we all need to feel more like we are professional.

Something that really helps me stay focused at home is making sure that I do my work in a room we have our office set up. Not on my laptop while sitting on the couch!! 🙂

    Hi Wendy,

Great to be back on your blog. Staying productive is always my working mantra whether I am at home or in the office. But you pointed out one thing that I am guilty of; staying in my pajamas. It’s just too comfortable sometimes 🙂 I’ll remember to get out of it more often.

I know what you mean. PJ’s are very comfortable. I just find it is easy for me to slack a bit when I wear them. I’m way more productive when I’m dressed.

    Hey Wendy,
Excellent tips, been looking for this everywhere! Working for home does in fact feel like a dream but most of the time, we don’t feel like working at all. My procrastination doubled and I get distracted a lot because we’re too comfortable.

I guess getting out of our comfort zone does indeed have an effect on productivity, I always shower first thing before starting work on my computer too just like you said. Loving your blog, will be dropping by soon for more!

Excellent points! I know many people get out of the groove of working from home as they allow the chores they have to do interfere with their work and then they end up quitting their business and going to back into the corporate world. It is quite a tragedy if people can’t stay focused.

I have to admit that in the part about getting moving I suddenly realized I hadn’t moved in about 90 minutes so I got up. Thanks for that reminder!
