How To Get People To Buy From You Online

Today, I want to share with you how to get people to buy from you online. Because that is what affiliate marketing is all about. It’s about people buying your stuff. Okay it is more than that but really that is the bottom line. We are all here to make money online. So I wanted to share with you what is an important key in getting people to buy from you online.

One of the biggest lessons that I learned (the hard way) about affiliate marketing is that people will never buy a thing from you unless you connect with them first.

I figured this out by accident a few years ago.

I wrote an article sharing a bad experience that I had. It was an embarrassing experience that I would never talk about to someone face to face. But I shared it because I thought it would help others who had the same problem I did. I told my embarrassing story and also shared how I was able to overcome the issue. I casually mentioned the product that helped me and I linked it to my affiliate site by using a simple hyper-link.

Adding the link was more of an afterthought than anything. I’m an Amazon Affiliate and I figured since they sell the product I was writing about, why not link it?

Within a few days I had several sales of the product that I mentioned in my article.

I was stunned. I mean I had written many articles about endless products and didn’t get sales. But then I thought about how this one was different. I mean I wasn’t even intending to get any sales. I was just trying to help others.

The difference with this article was I had no hidden agenda!

I wasn’t writing for a targeted keyword, or a specific product. I was sincerely looking to help others by sharing my personal experience and hopefully prevent them from having to go through a lot of hardship like I did. You see, I understood my reader. And I sincerely cared about them.

This is when I realized the secret to selling online. It is a pretty simple secret and one that I keep reminding myself about when I write. People don’t want to be sold, they want to be understood.

Now of course as affiliate marketers, we want to make money. That is why we are here right? We promote products and people will “hopefully” buy those products.

So how do you convey to your reader that you understand them?

Be sure to promote products or a niche that you are very familiar with. When you write about something that you understand first hand and have experience with, then it will be easy for you to write. People will connect with you right away and they will see you as an authority on the subject. They will want to read your stuff. And they will buy the products that your recommend.

You can also choose a niche that you have a lot of interest in even in your don’t have first hand knowledge. Just make sure you do your research. Know your target audience. Make sure you really understand where people are coming from and how they feel. Be sure you have a good understanding of the product you are promoting.

Be a story teller. When I write, I often write stories and share my own personal experiences with people. I share the good, the bad and the ugly. This makes it easy to connect with the reader. They realize I am just like them and they are not alone.

When people share the same experience with you, they feel understood and feel like they can trust you.

In conclusion in order to get more conversions and sales, STOP focusing on the product you are promoting. In stead, focus on the reader and the problem you are helping them with. Be a problem solver. Let your reader know you get it. Let them know you understand and then help them.

    Bingo! What you said about people wanting to be understood vs sold to is correct.

    If I walk into a store and have a problem but nothing in mind for what I want to buy and ask for help, I would probably buy from a sales rep who spoke to me and connected with my problem 100% of the time!

    hi there,
    thanks for the informative post on such an important topic. I think a lot of people that are new to affiliate marketing like myself have trouble with this but its quite simple to understand. You wouldn’t buy from someone you didn’t trust and know so why would you expect others to do the same. Any advice on what to do if you haven’t got any personal experience with regards to the niche your in or product your promoting.

      What you can do is write about what you hope to gain, or you could learn at the same time as your readers. For example: “Today I learned how to do keyword research and wrote an article. This is how I did it.”

    I have to agree that testing the product out is the best way to express your opinion with knowledge and confidence. If you try to help people first then you definitely have more chances to make a sale. But from my experience with my own website I see that most visitors don’t read content. They scan it and then leave. For that reason I add call to action phrases in order to catch the attention of some of them. I don’t like it but I have to do it. What do you think?

    I agree with you 100% here. If you can provide the right information to your readers and actually help them to solve their problem, then you will make sales.

    The easier and the more straightforward the information the better. Sometimes people just need to read a review of a product in order to make their final decision.

    Yes, you’re right when you say that people want to be understood. They also want solutions or ways to manage whatever problems they may have.

    I find that writing in a compassionate manner is definitely helpful when posting. And we can’t lose sight of the fact that there are human beings behind the technology who wants to belong and be understood.

    I definitely agree that helps comes first before selling! You want to build up a relationship with the person who is buying from you,so in the future he would come back to your website. For that reason building up some kind of relationship and trust is necesssary. I wish there would be more genuine people out there! Thanks for a great article!

      I would do a lot of reasearch and read reviews online, both positive and negative. Then I would let them know why I would recommend the product based on my new knowledge.

    i think you just put the art of selling by not selling in a beautiful way. I remember I was once a unit trust consultant. I managed to land a few sales not by selling, but my communicating with people and understand their fear of investing and giving them the bare honest fact.

    It was the same thing when I started my electronics design business 5 years back. I’m hoping now to replicate this online as well. Thanks for the reminder.
