I love getting comments on my website. Comments are a good thing when it comes to blogging. As long as they add value, comments can help your rankings with the search engines. In this post, I will be sharing with you how to manage comments on your blog.
Positive comments are always welcome. Let’s face it, as writers we enjoy hearing that our blog post has helped someone. And positive blog comments also reinforce your contents value. It lets other potential readers know that this post will benefit them.
Negative comments (those where someone disagrees with you) are also excellent for your post because it helps to generate discussion between you and the reader. When you respond to their comment, it starts a conversation.
Feedback both positive and negative can be a good thing. When people share their opinions, views, and ideas on a topic it helps to create interaction between you and your reader and helps to make your post more interesting as readers can see other points of view. And many of these readers will come back often just to see if there is anything new. So this in itself is going to generate traffic.
One of the best things about blog comments is that they help to add content to your post. One of the things that I have learned about SEO is that Google loves quality content and the more you have the better. So if your article is only 400 words, down the road it may have up to 1000 words because of all the comments left by others and this is going to help you rank better with the search engines.
You want to make sure you use the Akismet plugin on your WordPress blog. Akismet is a WordPress anti spam plugin that is very effective. Akismet is awesome and will catch most of your spam. You will be able to catch any spam that was missed by simply reading the comments and approving, spamming or deleting them.
Spam comments or comments that are computer generated should be deleted right away as they don’t add any value and may keep the search engines from ranking your site.
Most spam is really obvious but sometimes people will write a post that really makes no sense at all. They just want to add their link. So if there is a link as part of their comment, it is probably spam. But not always.
Often I have people write a comment that is very relevant to my site and I know it would benefit my readers. But sometimes people include a link within their comment. I found an excellent solution to this. I simply click on the edit button and then I remove the link from the comment. Then I simply approve it.
Sometimes readers will comment simply by saying something like “nice post.” This doesn’t add any value to your post. But it isn’t really spam. So I would just simply delete it.
I only approve quality comments where the content is related to the topic being discussed.
I hope you found this information helpful. If you have any advice about managing comments, I would love to hear from you.
